Over the past two weeks and for the next two weeks students will be working with me on a range of topics.

Mathematics
Students have been working on chance and probability. They have created their own chance line and associated chance with words, percentages, fractions and decimals. Students have explored the mathematical terms ‘random’ ‘sample space’ and ‘the law of large numbers’. Students will continue to explore chance in fraction form through dice, cards and interactive games.

English
Students are working towards writing their own ‘fractured fairytale’. Students have read and crticially analysed a wide range of both traditional and modern contemporary fairy tales looking for similarities, differences and various fairytale elements. Students have explored the terms ‘stereotype’ and ‘sexism’ and have been analysing traditional fairytales for possible stereotypes and sexism. Students will now be drafting and editing their own fractured fairytale free of stereotypes and sexism.

Physical Education
Students have been working on Hip Hop and Dance in Physical Education. Students have demonstrated the ability to cooridnate a series of choreographed movements in time with their peers and to the counts of music. They are now working on developing their own dance in groups for presentaion. Students are to choose the style of dance, the song and be able to explain the meaning behind the song and the story behind their own dance. One student has been given the role of videoing and interviewing the different groups to demonstrate their progress. This will eventually be presented as a short film.

Arts: Drama
Students have been focusing on improvisation in Drama. This includes role playing and putting students in various improvisational scenarios.

Society and Environment
Students have been focusing on Children’s rights. Students have the task of researching Children’s rights in a given country and present their findings to the class in a 2 minute oral presentation as a group.

I am looking forward to teaching a whole week in week 5 and seeing how these topics work out!

Students are starting to gather some interesting information about their chosen issues.

Today I demonstrated how to use wordle.net to produce an interesting visual presentation which helps identify key words.

I am hoping that students will be able to produce some visually effective communication tools.

Have a look at Bradley’s presentation so far. You might like to write a comment.

This is another presentation thanks to Bradley. Keep up the great work.

Homework Week 3, Term 4

October 26th, 2009 by · 1 Comment · Assignments, Homework

Homework this week will be to continue to work on the poetry assignment. Students can be reading poems, picking some to share, and practicing reading them aloud. Students need to be prepared to discuss what type of language features the poet has used for effect, eg. alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, similes, metaphors, personification, idioms, or imagery. Can your child explain these features to you?

Students need to show parents the letter explaining that we will be commencing our Relationships and Sexual Health lessons on Tuesday of this week. Acknowledgement that this letter has been received can be shown by signing the student’s diary.

Preparations for going on camp on the 4th of November will begin this week. Some students have still not returned their medical consent forms. Be be mindful that many parents have ommitted the date of latest Tetanus injection and whether or not students have permission to sleep on the top bunk. We are looking forward to the great opportunities that Camp Illawonga will provide. Check out the web site to find out more.

From Little Things Big Things Grow

October 18th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

On Wednesday students listened to the song From Little Things Grow, written by Paul Kelly and Kevin Carmody. After watching a live version of the song and reading and discussing the lyrics students are beginning to understand the meaning behind this song and its historical significance.

Who are the characters mentioned?
What issue does this song deal with?
How do Paul Kelly and Kevin Carmody feel about this issue?
How would other people have felt at the time of the events described? Eg. farmers, Prime Minister, Lord Vestey, Aboriginal people in other parts of the country?

Here is a YouTube video which explains this song’s significance further.

Today Ms Heywood worked with students to demonstrate how to use a drawing compass to create a regular hexagon. She also showed students how to accurately construct congruent shapes using a protractor and ruler.

Check your understanding of the mathematical meanings of congruent and similar.

Students also reviewed the symbols for parallel, equivalent, and right angles.

Can you remember how to show perpendicular lines?

What does ‘intersecting’ mean?
